Glenfinnan is the site of the famous Glenfinnan Monument, built in 1815 to remember the Jacobite clansmen who fought and died for Prince Charles Edward Stuart. It was here on 19th August 1745 that the Prince’s Standard was raised leading to the final, and ultimately failed attempt to reinstate the Stuarts on the throne of Great Britain and Ireland.
The monument overlooking the northern end of Loch Sheil and Glenfinnan Viaduct are a popular tourist destination, and indeed the viaduct in recent years has become a huge draw for visitors having been featured in the Harry Potter movies. If you are planning to make Glenfinnan a stop on your itinerary, caution is advised, as in the summer extremely large numbers of visitors and their associated vehicles swarm into the tiny village to view the “Harry Potter train” or more accurately named “Jacobite” crosses the viaduct on its way to Mallaig on the West Coast.
If the Jacobite is your preferred destination in Glanfinnan, we would advise arriving extremely early in order to be able to park and walk to the viaduct. There is a car park at the Visitor Centre, however this is limited and you may be forced to walk a good distance in order to get a view.
Glenfinnan is just 25 minutes from Guisachan House in Fort William and is one of the many places you can visit if based in the town.
