The Hidden Valley in Glencoe (or Lost Valley as it is sometimes referred to) is a hike that we’ve been meaning to do ever since we moved here four years ago.
Its Gaelic name for the Hidden Valley is Coire Gabhail (Corrie of the Bounty) was formed like much of the Highlands by glaciation and is renowned due to the Clan MacDonald having used it to hide cattle and other livestock in days gone by.
The walk into the Hidden Valley involves crossing the river and then ascending via a steep path into the gorge along the side of a tumbling burn. The walk up takes approximately 1.5 hours and sometimes involves the use of hands on rocks to steady yourself. One part, in particular involves traversing a steeply angled rock using a precarious narrow ledge. This part is easier to go up than down.
Once at the top, the path opens out providing you with a view of the Coire (curved hollow).
For keen walkers, this route gives you options to go on to explore the two munros that flank the valley.
On a nice day, it would be a fabulous place to have a quiet picnic and explore a bit more, and for keen photographers there’s plenty of water around for long exposure work!
The hike wasn’t quite as spectacular as the hike up Ben Nevis, but it was well worth it.
