Glen Etive is an 18km long valley that runs south from Rannoch Moor, and is flanked at its northern end by Buachaille Etive Mor. This one of the most recognisable mountains in Scotland (actually comprising three peaks Stob Dearg, Stob na Doire, Stob Coire Altrium and Stob na Bròige).
The River Etive runs from the Kings House Hotel on Rannoch Moor, and winds its way along Glen Etive where it meets the northern extremity of Loch Etive; which itself is some 30km long and feeds into the sea at Connel (5km north of Oban).
For those interested in photographing water, Glen Etive is the perfect location as the River Etive tumbles its way south. There are many locations where you can get down to the waters edge to photograph cascading waterfalls and rapids.
Glen Etive gained some degree of renown as it was used in the James Bond movie Skyfall in 2012. The challenge is to find the spot where Bond and M stood beside Bond’s Aston Martin gazing down the glen.
For those wishing to see a little of the local wildlife Glen Etive has a large population of resident deer which are unperturbed by the many visitors to the glen.
