View of Ben Nevis from Corpach

I am often asked by guests “where can you get a good view of Ben Nevis?”  Ben Nevis is Britain’s tallest mountain, standing at 1345m above sea level.  That’s not particularly tall, as mountains go, but what makes Ben Nevis unique is that it rises above Fort William, a town in the Highlands of Scotland, which is perched at sea level on the shores of Loch Linnhe a tidal loch,

Thus, whilst you can get a good view of Ben Nevis, approaching it from the south as you finish the West Highland Way, it is merely another mountain among many in the area.

But the best view of Ben Nevis is arguably from the northern shore of Loch Linnhe in Corpach, a small settlement which is part of the greater Fort William conurbation.  Here, from the rocky beach you can gaze eastward toward the massive lump of granite that is Ben Nevis, the collapsed inner dome of a volcano that is believe to have erupted some 350 million years ago.

The view of Ben Nevis from Corpach beach is nothing less than spectacular, as it towers above Fort William.  No wonder its name, Beinn Nibheis, is often translated as “venomous mountain”, as it dominates the landscape, including other mountains that are close by.

You can imagine people in times gone by, marvelling at its majesty!  In fact, many legends and stories have been woven around this iconic mountain, highlighting its significance in Scottish folklore.

Of course, the only way you can get to see Ben Nevis personally, is to visit Fort William yourself.  Where better to base yourself for a visit to the Scottish Highlands.  Perfectly positioned to be able to explore the area, hike or climb our local mountains, enjoy water sports, or simply relax and enjoy the peace and tranquility.
