Fort William Mountain Festival 2027: A Celebration of Mountain Culture

Every winter, Fort William celebrates its place at the heart of Scotland’s outdoor community with the Fort William Mountain Festival, bringing together people with a shared enthusiasm for mountains, adventure and the great outdoors.

The Fort William Mountain Festival 2027 takes place from Thursday 11 to Sunday 14 February 2027. The festival describes its purpose as celebrating mountain culture while inspiring, educating and connecting people through outdoor experiences.

With Fort William sitting beneath Ben Nevis and surrounded by the mountains and glens of Lochaber, there’s arguably nowhere more appropriate for it.

What is the Fort William Mountain Festival?

The Fort William Mountain Festival is a celebration of the outdoors and the people who explore, enjoy and protect wild places.

Rather than concentrating on just one activity, the festival spans a remarkably wide range of interests. Its programme encompasses climbing, running, mountain biking, paddling, snowsports, swimming, nature, photography, film, visual art, literature, outdoor skills and adventure stories.

The festival combines indoor events with opportunities to get out into the Highland landscape itself.

Visitors can expect a mixture of talks, workshops, films, guided outdoor events and adventure-inspired workshops.

Whether you’re an experienced mountaineer or simply love Scotland’s mountains and scenery, there is usually plenty to make a winter trip to Fort William worthwhile.

When is the Fort William Mountain Festival 2027?

The 2027 festival will take place over four days:

Thursday 11 February to Sunday 14 February 2027.

At the time of writing, the organisers are still preparing the detailed programme, which is scheduled to launch in November.

That means it is worth checking the programme nearer the time before deciding which days you would particularly like to attend.

More Than Films and Talks

One of the attractions of the festival is the breadth of mountain culture it celebrates.

Alongside talks, films and outdoor activities, the festival hosts competitions and awards celebrating adventure and excellence in the outdoors. These include the Culture Awards, Golden Axe Competition, Photography Competition and Film Competition.

The result is an event that isn’t only about climbing mountains. Photography, filmmaking, writing, art and storytelling all have a place alongside the more physical side of outdoor adventure.

Why Visit Fort William in February?

Fort William is best known to many visitors as a summer destination, but visiting in February reveals a very different side of the Highlands.

The Mountain Festival gives you a good reason to spend a few days in town during the quieter winter months, with the dramatic Highland landscape right on the doorstep.

And you don’t have to be heading onto the highest mountains to enjoy a winter visit.

A festival weekend can just as easily combine an event or film with exploring Fort William, enjoying lower-level walks, taking photographs or simply appreciating the winter scenery around Lochaber.

Remember, though, that this is the Scottish Highlands in February. Conditions can be very different from those encountered here during the main visitor season, so anyone planning outdoor activities should choose something appropriate for both the conditions and their experience.

Make a Weekend of It

If you’re travelling to Fort William specifically for the Mountain Festival, we’d suggest allowing more than a single day if you can.

With events taking place from Thursday through Sunday, staying for a couple of nights gives you much more freedom to choose the talks, films or activities that interest you without having to squeeze everything around a long journey home.

It also gives you an opportunity to explore a little more of Lochaber while you’re here.

Fort William is surrounded by some of the Highlands’ best-known landscapes, with Ben Nevis immediately outside the town and Glen Nevis stretching into the mountains beyond.

If the weather isn’t suitable for the hills, there’s no shortage of reasons simply to slow down and enjoy being in the Outdoor Capital of the UK.

Staying in Fort William for the Mountain Festival

If you’re coming from further afield, staying in Fort William itself makes a lot of sense.

Guisachan Guesthouse is in Fort William, providing a convenient base for exploring the town and the wider Lochaber area. Our existing visitor information also highlights our en-suite rooms, freshly prepared breakfast, guest lounge, whisky bar and free parking.

For a February weekend, having somewhere comfortable to come back to after a day outside or an evening festival event can be particularly welcome.
